Maintaining Your Motivation

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

I recently spoke to a group of sales professionals at the end of their training conference. The attendees had participated in many learning sessions over a two day period – most of which were product related. I was scheduled to speak after dinner and I was somewhat concerned how attentive they would be by this time.

Fortunately, in the days preceding, the company had structured the entire program to create energy, excitement and to foster a sense of team enthusiasm. They had a theme and encouraged their vendors to incorporate the theme into each of their individual presentations. They awarded prizes for the team with the most energy and highest level of participation, and by the time dinner was served, the group was pumped. They were excited. And they were highly motivated and charged up. When I left that evening, I knew that these individuals would bring a renewed energy and drive to their work place. I was also confident that the company would see a definite increase in their sales in the weeks to follow.

It reminded me how motivational a conference, training workshop or corporate gathering can be. It reinforced the importance of participating in sessions like these on a regular basis, if for no other reason, but to ignite our own personal motivation.

Running a business is tiring, stressful and challenging. Small business owners are required to wear many hats, often at the same time, while executives of large organizations often have more problems and politics to manage on a daily basis. It is not uncommon for the business to drain our energy and motivation, regardless of how much we enjoy the business. If you do not take time to recharge your batteries and refresh your perspective it is easy to find yourself frustrated with your business.

That is why it is imperative to have a personal motivation plan in place. This means taking advantage of opportunities that will help you maintain your motivation. Here are few suggestions to help get you started.

Attend a personal development workshop. Identify an area in your business or personal live that you would like to improve. At the beginning of each year, I determine what types of programs I want to attend and begin looking for them. I find that these sessions give me a short break from the daily grind of my business and help me see things from a different perspective. Training programs, night courses, or weekend seminars that focus on a specific topic can give you a much needed boost in your energy.

Join a Master Mind group. Meeting with other like-minded people can help you see your business from a different perspective. An effective group will have between six and eight members from a variety of industries and will usually meet several times a year. If you have the right chemistry between members, these meetings will not only help you improve your business, they will also motivate you to try new approaches and market your business differently.

Exercise. I am an avid runner and have completed two marathons and several half marathons. I occasionally find myself in a position when I cannot run for a period of time due to illness, injury, or the demands of work. Without fail, I notice a decrease in my personal motivation during these times. Regular exercise helps your body work more effectively and efficiently. Although I usually catch myself thinking about work related issues during my runs, I often notice that I develop more creative solutions when I am exercising.

Read or listen to motivational material. Instead of reading the daily newspaper with breakfast or coffee in the morning, try reading inspirational material instead. A well-written book that offers sound advice is more motivating than reading about the latest market declines. Listening to motivational tapes or CD’s in your car for one hour everyday can actually give you the equivalent of a university degree in a few years time.

Take time off. It is not a badge of honor to state, “I’m too busy to take time off.” In today’s fast-paced business world, it is critical to take time off for vacation and rest and relaxation. Even a long weekend away from your business can be restful. A true vacation also means completely avoiding email and voicemail. Yes, you will have hundreds of messages to deal with when you return, but you will have a renewed focus and energy to do this.

Lastly, associate with positive people. I have made it a point in the latter part of my career to distance myself from negative individuals. They drain your energy, will not support your goals and desires, and do little to motivate you. On the other hand, positive and optimistic people will uplift your spirits and help you through challenging times.

Write Anything That Comes To Mind!

Monday, April 27th, 2009

I just finished writing an article about Gichin Funakoshi, the “Father” of modern karate.

Looking over the piece, I found myself feeling very pleased, and not because I think its exposition is great.

I’m pleased because I selected the topic, I chose to make it an article, and I selected the publication completely on my own.

It’s exactly what I wanted to write, and literally, it was the first topic that popped into my mind this morning.

I’m sharing this with you because you can do the same thing, providing you post your articles at: www.ezinearticles.com, or at a similar site.

You aren’t restricted to writing in any single category.

I’m expert in a few fields, to be sure, but it gives me great joy to till some new ones, every now and then.

For instance, I’ve written at least a half-dozen articles lately about major league baseball, and I’ve published about the same number of reviews of movies that pertain to the martial arts.

I think this is what being a journalist, and in a larger sense, what being a speaker and a communicator, are all about.

We should feel free to write in whatever areas we choose. It’s a way of expanding our craft, our trade skills, and our value.

I pity those who are writing exactly the same piece, hundreds of times over.

Norman Corwin said:

“I believe there is in every ambitious writer, potential talent that he/she may not even recognize, because they haven’t been afforded a chance to write imaginatively or in a way that calls on deep resources.”

So, stretch a little. I think you’ll like it!

Writing Goals Equals Writing Success

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

Why do you write?

What is your writing motivation or writing goal? Is it to get published or a stress releaser? Is it to help you in your job or is it for recreation? Is it to learn new poetry forms or to perfect meter in your poetry? Is it for school assignments or maybe it is just to create and control little universes (insert evil laugh here). For many, it is a combination of these.

Say it loud; say it proud!

Now you have identified why you write, it’s time to go to the next step. Give it a voice. Make a mission statement. Put it in writing. This will help you focus on the big picture as you follow the steps to your goal.

Now what?

Now you need to research the steps you need to take to achieve that goal. List everything from the time needed every day to the private nook in the kitchen or den you want as a writing space. Do you need a regular day a week to go to the library? Write it down! Need some reference books? Write it down! These steps will become the ladder you need to reach your writing goal.

Follow the plan, Stan!

From here it is just a matter of following the steps. Don’t let little stumbles keep you from your goal. Pick yourself up and start climbing again. Your goal has changed? Edit your steps and mission statement to reflect the change.

Go for the goal.

The climb may be an easy one or a difficult one depending on your goal. The task of learning new poetry forms for fun is different from writing a college thesis but follow your steps and don’t forget to enjoy the view as you reach for your star.

6 Simple Ways Writing Articles Will Improve Your Link Popularity

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Article writing and distribution creates free one way incoming links back to your web site. Link building in this manner increases your web sites exposure, visitors and you overall search engine rankings. By using the following techniques you can dramatically improve your web site traffic in a very short period of time.

1. Create Viral Content For Your Web Site – Add your own resource box/byline to your articles and post them on your web site. You could allow your visitors to
publish the articles on their web site if they also include your resource box and keep your hyperlink active. This will spread your link around the internet like a virus and increase your link popularity fast.

2. Submit your articles to free content web sites for other webmasters to reprint for publishing. When you include your resource box at the end of the article with your website URL you will not only get free advertising but you will get a link back to your site. This will increase your link popularity and cause your site to rank higher in the search engines.

3. Combine your articles into a free e-book. You can place your business ad and hyperlinks back to your site in the e-book. E-book creating software is inexpensive and easy to use. By giving your e-book away to visitors and allowing them to link to your site to give it away to their visitors will multiply your web site traffic, exposure and link popularity.

4. Create an article directory on your web site. People will visit your web site to get the free information. By allowing them to reprint your articles with the stipulation that they keep the resource box and hyperlink active you will increase your link popularity. Also allow your visitors to place a link on their web site that links back to your article directory. By providing your free “instant article directory” to their visitors you will increase your web site’s exposure and receive a percentage of their visitors as well.

5. Offer other web sites, that are relevant to your own, free content articles about your area of expertise to post on their web site. Include your link on all of your content. Your article should be related to your web site because it will bring you visitors that are interested in your product or service.

6. Use an article distribution service that distributes articles to thousands of web sites, newsletters and ezines at one time. Your article will be published on dozens of web sites almost immediately. I used this technique with an article distribution service called http://www.thephantomwriters.com and got literally thousands of links from only four articles. Distribute your articles several times and you will increase your exposure. Change your article’s title and redistribute it several times more to maximize your article’s potential.

As you can clearly see, writing and distributing articles can have a profound affect on your web site’s exposure. There is absolutely no better or faster way to increase your web site’s exposure, link popularity and search engine rankings.

Get Cheap Sports Shoe Equipment Online Today

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Sports footwear is maybe the most significant piece of equipment you’ll pay money for so it’s necessary that you decide on the suitable pair. Find superb deals on horse riding jackets online today.

A great number of people do not recognise that there are numerous differences in the way in which sports shoes help your feet. It’s not good for your feet if you take part in football or tennis in the exact same footwear that you use whilst jogging.

“It has been reported, that sixty-five percent of the UK’s recreational men sportsmen and women athletes wear the wrong footwear for their preferred sport,” he says. “Shoes are the most essential piece of fitness equipment you’ll ever obtain and altering what you wear on your feet can avert damage.”

Football can put a lot of tension on the feet, especially when playing on firm surfaces for example AstroTurf. The shoes can also put strain on your feet, and it is not exceptional for a footballer to suffer from corns, calluses or damaged, thickened & ingrown toenails. A terrific, well-fitted pair of football shoes is crucial & there shouldn’t be any signs of pressure on the foot after a game or training session.

Racquet sports: It’s fundamental when taking part racquet sports, for example table tennis or badminton, to elect on shoes expressly intended for the purpose. These sports activity involve lots of side-to-side movement and running footwear will not offer the apt firmness. Racquet sport footwear are heavier and more rigid than jogging footwear, since their toes are designed for stop-&-go action. Comfort is recommended to be your core priority and it is important to swap your sports trainers commonly.

Hill walking is a terrific way to begin a gentle exercise schedule, whereas the more daring go for mountaineering. It’s wonderful for your cardiovascular health but is lower impact and so comes with less risk of harm.

A First-timer’s Guide to Building a Professional Writing Portfolio

Sunday, April 19th, 2009

You’d like to earn income as a technical or professional writer, but you don’t possess a portfolio that will help you earn the respect of editors or publishers. There are some things you can do to build a respectable, professional collection of articles, letters and press releases that will become the foundation of a worthy portfolio.

Work with Nonprofit Groups
Nonprofit groups rely on the goodwill of volunteers for their success. Local chapters of groups like March of Dimes, American Lung Association and The American Cancer Society often seek volunteers to write feature stories for their newsletters, and they’re often ready to empower writers with story ideas and contact information for interviewees. If you offer to write for a nonprofit group, there is a good chance that your work will be published in a professional-looking document with the logo of a respected organization.

Work with New Businesses
Contact your state business development office to learn about businesses that are in the process of launching. Find one (or more) that appeals to you, contact the owner and express your desire to help. Be willing to sign a release that defines your role as a volunteer, and your stories as “free.” Do a good job, and your efforts may lead to regular paid work.

Blog
Most businesses know about blogs, but many don’t have the knowledge or resources to make blogging work in their favor. Publish your own blog on a topic that allows you to establish credibility. Solicit feedback, especially from professionals you might value your efforts. Keep records of the positive comments you receive and print the comments and your strongest posts for your portfolio. Offering editors proof that you are contemporary and savvy with regard to the Internet will help your cause. You can find free blogging space on the Web.

Stages of Second Language Acquisition

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

Many students often worry or complain about their inability to produce spoken (and sometimes written) language. They have studied a language for 6 months or even longer and they can produce just a few words and phrases. Usually, even teachers feel their students are not making as much progress as they should. After all, they say, they have been practicing patterns, drills, even some conversations in class but nevertheless, although their students can understand many things, when it comes to producing them on their own, they are at a loss.

The good news is, this is not bad or undesirable at all! It is part of a four-step language acquisition process that could be broken into:

1) The Silent Period: in this stage, most students understand more than they can produce. They can understand when someone talks to them but they cannot express their ideas in the same way. They can answer “yes” or “no.”

2) Early Production: learners can answer some “yes” or “no” questions, they use repetitive language patterns to express ideas and they try to express concepts by using one or two words only. They cannot find the words to make complete sentences.
It is important to bear in mind that comprehension precedes production. This is especially true in Second Language Acquisition. You can always understand more of a language then you can produce.

3) Speech emergence: in this stage, learners can communicate with simple phrases and sentences. They will ask simple questions that may or may not be grammatically correct. It is common to see thay they will start some short conversations.

4) Intermediate Fluency: at this stage, learners are using more complex sentences when speaking and writing. They can express opinions and share their thoughts. They also have the ability to formulate questions in order to ask for clarification.

5)Advanced Fluency: a student at this stage will be near-native in their ability to perform in the second language, although there may be some gaps specially when it comes to idiomatic uses of the language.

It goes without saying that this article is not exhaustive and actually whole books could be written on each of these stages and that my intention while writing this article was to present the lay reader with a glimpse of the different stages of this captivating topic.

By being aware of these stages, you can feel confident about your learning process and you can lower your anxiety levels if you feel you cannot express exactly what you have in mind. Time is your ally here!

If you need more info on the topic, just google the following keywords “stages of second language acquisition.” You are way on your way to learning about your own learning!
