Friday, November 27th, 2009A Graduation ceremony is incomplete without a graduation cap. The Universities in Europe use these caps for the very first time in 12th century. The basic concept behind this graduation dress the long robes and the caps were to protect the students and teachers from severe cold, as if there were no heaters and other machines to keep the temperature to normal. These robes and caps cover the whole body and protect the person from the cold breeze. 12th century was the time where there were no heaters to keep the students and the faculties warm. Therefore, this is a short and exciting story behind the creation of the academic robe and this cap. These days the academic halls are fully equipped with all the facilities like in winter, they keep the halls warm and in summer they make the hall’s cold, but still the old tradition is alive and students and teachers used to wear these on the graduation day.
Graduation caps are according to the different area of graduation in university
The Academic robe and these caps, which we see these days, are not as it as in past, they have been changing as the time past, and it took a very long time for the current shape, which we see these days. These days every single university has their own designed robes and caps with different colors and logos on them. Although, the universities use different colors but the basic color of the robes and caps are black. The colorful strips on black dress and caps are according to the different area of graduation. Like if some one has graduated in medical the student will wear a green strip robe, if a student has passed in law, he will wear a purple one and the list goes on and on because there is now numerous subject in which a student can graduate. The bottom part of the Graduation caps is round tubular in shape, which gives a firm hold to the cap on your head and the top of the cap is flat and in rectangle shape always.

If a graduating student gets a voluntary society membership, he will receive a special colored cord. It is as if a student is outstanding in extra curricular and other academic activities, he will award a different color of academic cap and robe.
